How Heavy is Too Heavy For My Kids Backpack?

How many times have you seen a child walking, leaning forward carrying their backpack that appears to weigh more than they do? This is such a common sight to see in today’s society. The weight of your child’s backpacks are beyond dangerous. Studies have shown the maximum weight your child backpack should be ranges from 10-15% of their body-weight. For example your child weighs 80 pounds, their backpack should not weight more than 8-12 lbs. Lets be honest right now, If I gave out a dollar to every child who had their backpack within those ranges, I would have maybe bought a gallon of gas in San Diego – $3.50. More importantly what is this additional weight doing to your child? The realization is the kids I see walking around San Diego are carrying upwards of 20-30% of their body weight which is between 16-24 lbs for an 80 lb child. That is double the weight that should be carried, at a maximum. So what are the long term effects of this? Well when carrying heavier weight on our backs, we tend to lean forward creating a forward posture. This ultimately creates very poor posture leading them to long term posture issues, higher risk of degenerative changes at a younger age, and the potential of longer term spinal issues. As a San Diego Chiropractor, it is extremely important for us to make sure children are set up for the ultimate success from a health standpoint. We can help avoid back pain, neck pain, headaches, and much more by making sure the spine is in alignment and they are properly...

Are You Getting Enough Water?

Summer is upon us full swing here in San Diego! It is essential for us to drink water, as our body demands LOTS of it. As the temperatures rise so does your core body temperature. Water can not only help neutralize that, but so many more benefits. So as you sit on the beaches of La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and surrounding San Diego destinations take lots and lots of water. If you are lacking hydration some key signs you may experience are dizziness, feeling of tiredness, headaches, and much more. For children, some signs to keep an eye out for are dry tongue and no tears while crying. If you notice things like this get some water in them as soon as possible. You may also notice they become more fussy than normal, which can be a plethora of things, one of which is colicky, which ultimately is a digestive issue that we have great success dealing with. For you adults, if you are not urinating at least 4 times a day, have dark urine with a strong smell. You my friend are dehydrated. How much water should we be consuming? Well there are so many ways out there, however I personally feel the easiest way is to take you total body weight and by two. So half of you body weight should be drank in ounces. For example if you are 180 lbs you should consume 90 ounces of water daily. When you are drinking enough water, it has shown improvement on energy and brain function, may help prevent headaches, constipation, kidney stones, and weight loss. As little...

Opioid Epidemic

We are going to address some large concerns, what is the opioid crisis, how did it start, what can be done, and is it really that big of an issue. The opioid crisis is so impactful right now that it is literally killing over 115 people daily in our great country, which accounts for over 40,000 deaths a year from overdose of opioids. From July 2016 to September 2017 the Midwest saw opioid overdose grow over 70%. Not only is this an extremely deadly ordeal, it is also creating a massive economic burden of over $78.5 Billion a year due to cost of healthcare, addiction treatment, lost productivity, as well as criminal justice involvement. This is not even to mention the strains it forms on family, friends, and loved ones. This all can be dated back to the 90s when pharmaceutical companies made a strong push for pain killers to be prescribed. The opioid pain killers lead to heroin, and fentanyl use. Approximately 25% of people prescribed opioids for chronic pain misuse the drugs, with 80% of people whom use heroin misused the prescription opioids first. So what can be done for this incredible crisis?! Well first we need to say what it is, chronic pain patients are being prescribed pain killers. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking non-addictive strategies to manage chronic pain. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes chiropractic as one of the leading avenues for this non-addictive strategies to manage chronic pain. West Virginia recently implemented mandatory 20 visits to a chiropractor or acupuncturist BEFORE even considering being prescribed opioids by a medical...

CDC Global Health in the Dominican Republic

The Center for Disease Control, as of June 30 2017, has put in place the 3 goals for the organization in the Dominican Republic. The big three goals are to prevent new cases of HIV, reduce prevalence of tuberculosis (TB), and reduce the impact of infectious disease outbreaks. While we provide chiropractic care through Hands For Life UTC, we truly cannot stop the HIV issue or even the TB issue, well heck not even the infectious disease. So what are we good for?! What we can do is reduce infectious disease being spread! How do you ask? Well we do more than just adjust the populace. We also go to help provide safer drinking water. Many of the infectious disease stem from water in some capacity. Whether it is cholera, typhoid, hepatitis A, or schistosomiasis. These may not seem to severe to some, but these can be deadly. Especially in an underserved areas where means to obtain medical help is slim to none. If you want to help us change this major issue, please reach out to us at info@handsforlifeutc.org. Thank you, Dr. Zach Beatty, DC President- Hands For Life...

Governmental Corruption

This is based solely on research from export.gov a website to help US companies with exportation. This is not intended to bash or even implicate that government is or is not corrupt. We are merely portraying the perception of the people for all to understand the living conditions and mindset of the populace. In 2016 a study showed that 46% of the population felt the country’s government is progressively getting more corrupt, which is elevated higher than in 2014 and 2015. Again in 2016, a airplane manufacturer from Brazil paid the US a criminal penalty for bribing Dominican Republic officials among several other countries. The thought of governmental corruption is a very public displeasure among Dominican people. Which le us be honest, it is one thing to have maybe the lacking trust of your people, while you hold power, but for a country to grow, especially in the Caribbean it requires efforts from other countries. In 2016 Transparency International scored Dominican Republic 21, which ranked them 120 out of 176 countries in terms of corruption. Again in 2016 The World Economic Forum’s 2016 Global Competitiveness report stated that corruption is the biggest factor of people wanting to do business in the Dominican Republic, ultimately ranking DR 123 of 138 countries. More concerning is that the country was in the bottom 20 of 138 countries for public trust in politicians, reliability of police services, ethical behavior of firms, and favoritism in decisions of government officials. In short, the country has a lot of things going on and I have seen it first hand, that the power is shut down for...

Chickengunya

Wow, what a word that is, Chickengunya. Cmon now, who else is having fun saying that word? How many of us have ever heard of this word? I can imagine if we were in a classroom, not many of you would be raising your hands currently. Well you haven’t heard it for a couple of reasons, but the central reason is because it is extremely rare. Let me start off by describing what it is, what the symtoms are, then we can dive into its rarity. Chickengunya is a virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes. It creates a person to experience fever, joint pain, muscle pain, joint swelling, and even a rash can occur. This can persist for months. Imagine having your joints feel like the flu or even more severe pain non-stop for months. That is what so many people in parts of the Dominican Republic deal with daily, yearly. There is no known cure, vaccine to prevent, or anything for Chickengunya. The rarity of this in the US based on CDC less than 1,000 cases per year. In the Dominican, they are not so lucky. While there in 2015 seeing underserved populations, I would say Chickengunya accounted for 25-50% of the people we saw in a weeks time. And we did not just see 5 people, we saw hundreds if not over a thousand people during that time. We were down by the river beds, an obvious feasting ground for mosquitoes, where the less fortunate live. They were coming in nonstop with complaints of joint pain, muscle aches, fevers, etc. Upon our chiropractic adjustments on them, many...

Unsafe Drinking Water

Here in the US, we are pretty darn lucky. We can lift the handle, push the button, and out comes pretty safe drinking water. Not every country, not even every part of this country is so lucky. In the Dominican Republic, this is truly a very big issue. Many water born disease, specifically cholera, which creates diarrhea can be deadly. For many of us the outburst of toxins flushes our systems, after drink a little of this. Imagine drinking that water for a week straight, a month, a year. What becomes more of an annoyance for us, is a fatal issue in the DR. Diarrhea accounts for half of all children deaths under one year of age. Let us have that sink in. Over half of the deaths of all children under one year old is due to something, we as a whole in our country do not even think twice about….drinking water. A essential to our existence on this planet, a simple feat that is required by our bodies to survive, is a life threatening issue for so many around the world. Dig deep, and find a way to help others. -Dr Zach Beatty,...

The importance of a healthy nervous system

What does a healthy nervous system mean for you? Hands For Life has 3 main areas of focus, and one of them is to help the financial hard-shipped population achieve an efficient nervous system. The reason a healthy nervous system is so important is because it’s what runs everything in your body. No cell or tissue goes un-touched by your nervous system. Without your nervous system, your heart wouldn’t know when or how to beat, your lungs wouldn’t be able to expand to allow you to breathe, and your muscles wouldn’t be able contract to help you lift your arm. When your nervous system is functioning correctly, then your body is able to perform all the things it needs to do. It also should be able to fight off any virus, bacteria, or disease. However, when the nervous system is compromised, or not working efficiently, then our body begins to break down. We believe everyone on planet earth should have their nervous system checked for interference or issues. If that was the case our world would be much better...
